10年前に私がフランスで学生に戻っていた時に面白いと感じたのは、ビジネスだけでなく、哲学、数学、法律という感じで、2つの学位（ダブル・ディグリー）を目指している人が結構いたことです。
ダブル・ディグリーの学生がいることによって、ビジネススクールの授業でも「法律のダブル・ディグリー生はいないかな？」と教授が質問した際、法律を勉強している人が解説するという場面がありました（私に対しては、「日産とルノーの連携」についての質問が一番多かったですね :-)。
哲学を専攻している学生が、授業中に面白い発言をしており、彼がイングランドの哲学者トマス・ホッブズと2008年の金融危機を絡めたことを今でも覚えています。
今回紹介する資料「リヴァイアサン」は1651年に出版された政治哲学書であり、秩序がない無法地帯を「自然状態」と呼んでいます。
国家が成立して自然状態を脱するためには、「最低限のルールが必要」とホッブズは考察しています。
ビジネススクールの経営倫理という授業の中で、「2008年の金融危機はなぜ起こったのか？」という議論になり、金融機関出身である私にもコメントが求められて、以下のように回答しました。
「私がニューヨークで働いていた2000年代前半、バンカー達は目標を達成すれば高額な報酬を得られた。一方、目標を達成できなければ、仕事を失うだけだった。
『法的にグレーで顧客のためになるか不明』という取引にバンカーは直面したが、高額報酬という無限のリターンと失職という限定されたリスクを比較した際、結果的に目標達成が優先された。」
これに対して哲学を勉強している学生が、以下のようにコメントしました。
「Mr. PDCA（私のことね :-) の職場は、リヴァイアサンに出てくる自然状態そのものである。自然状態を脱して、法が強制力を発揮する社会を『国家』とホッブズは定義した。
Mr. PDCA（私のことよ :-) の職場は先進国であるアメリカにあったが、当局による規制が機能せず、ウォール街の強欲な人達にとって、法の制約だけでは不十分であることを、2008年の金融危機は証明したことになる。
重要なのは、『その取引を本当に実行して良いかどうか？』と迷った際、『実行すべきではない』と自らを律する倫理観である。」

P.S. 金融機関の経営者がホッブズの「リヴァイアサン」を読んだかどうかは不明ですが、2009年以降、世界的に「コンプライアンスと倫理」が重視されるようになりました。
私の前職でもチーフ・コンプライアンス・オフィサーに加えて、「最高倫理責任者（Chief Ethics Officer）」が新たに設置され、倫理違反は一発退場という雰囲気が強くなりました。
法的にグレーで、顧客のためになるかどうか不明な取引やプロセスに直面した際、どのような対応が合理的かについて、経営倫理の教授は以下のように話をしました。
「君達の家族やパートナーにきちんと説明できるかがポイントになる。説明できないのであれば、何らかの問題がある可能性が高い。最終的にはビジネス・デシジョンであり、君達が自分で判断することだ。」
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「ミスコン」 = 「pageant」＞
先日お会いした方から「TOEFLやTOEIC等の英語テストで点数を上げるコツはあるでしょうか？」という質問があり、私は「経験上、過去問を覚えるまで解くのが効果的」と回答しました。
また、英語は言葉であるため単語を覚えなければ、話すことも聞くことも書くこともできないことから、基本的には「語彙力 = 語学力」になります。
私の場合、NHKやCNNのニュース等で分からない英単語が出てくると、その場でスマホで調べるようにしています。
外国語の場合、どれだけ勉強しても分からない単語は出てくるため、この作業は永遠（？）に続くことになりますが、新しい単語が出てきた場合、人物と結びつけると忘れにくいような気がします。
外国人が聞いて分からない和製英語の一つに「ミスコン（ミスコンテスト）」がありますが、英語では「pageant」になります。
私がこの単語を初めて耳にしたのは、2016年の米国大統領選挙に関する英語ニュースであり、トランプ陣営の選挙マネージャーだったKellyanne Conway氏についての報道でした。
Conway氏は、女性として初めて大統領選挙に勝利した選挙マネージャーとして、アメリカでは有名な人物です。
元々は弁護士であり、その後、マーケティング調査会社を立ち上げ、綿密な分析によって、トランプ大統領誕生の立役者の一人と言われています。
Conway氏は、ニュージャージーのミスコンで勝利したこともあるそうで、このニュースの中で今回紹介する英単語「pageant」 に私は遭遇しました。
私は自営時代、「ミスコンに出たことがあります」というIT企業社長秘書の方と出会ったことがありますが、「ミスコン」という和製英語を聞くたびにConway氏の顔を思い出し、忘れないようにしています（ミスコンは、「beauty pageant」ということもあるようです :-)。
What I felt interesting when I was returning to a student 10 years ago in France was that several students were majoring in two degrees (double degrees) in addition to business such as philosophy, mathematics and law, etc.
Since there were double degree students in Business School, professors at class can ask legal contents to law major students and math related items to math major students (I was asked inquiries regarding alliance between Nissan and Renault :-).
A student studying philosophy has made interesting remarks during the class and I still remember what he was talking about England philosopher Thomas Hobbes and the financial crisis of 2008.
The material to be introduced today "Leviathan" is a well know political philosophy book published in 1651 written by Hobbes.
In "Leviathan", Hobbes reiterates that an illegal situations without an order as "State of nature" and he also mentions that "Minimum rules are necessary to form a nation".
In the class of business ethics in France, "Why did the financial crisis in 2008 occur?" became a topic and the professor asked my comments, because I was working at US financial institution and I responded as follows.
"In the early 2000s when I (Mr. PDCA) worked in New York, the bankers got high compensations if they achieved the goals, but if they could not achieve the goal, they lost their jobs.
As a result, they had no choice but to promote legally gray tradings."
On the other hand, a philosophy major student commented as follows.
"The workplace where Mr. PDCA (me) worked in New York is a typical example of 'State of nature' explained in 'Leviathan'.
The financial crisis in 2008 proved that the limitation of the law alone is insufficient for the greedy people of Wall Street."

P.S. As a result of the financial crisis, most of financial institutions changed to organizations that prioritize ethics rather than benefits.
At my previous work place, "Chief Ethics Officer" was newly established in addition to the Compliance Officer.
Professor of Business Ethics class talked as follows regarding how we should behave when we face with legally and ethically gray transactions.
"The point is whether you can explain the transaction or process to your family or partner properly, and if you can not explain it, there is a high probability that there is something wrong.
However, it would be a business decision, it is up to you to proceed it or not."
