【PDCA日記 Vol. 139「石油の威力」】

 

国際捕鯨委員会（IWC）に関するニュースを時々目にすることがありますが、捕鯨国として日本とノルウェーが例に出されるケースが多くなっています。

 

今回紹介する資料「クジラ・イルカの疑問50」は「なぜクジラは大きいのか？」などの疑問に対する解説に加えて、捕鯨の歴史についても以下のように詳しく述べています。

 

「日本やノルウェーが鯨の肉を食べていたのに対し、イギリスやアメリカなどの国々は主に油（鯨油）を取ることを目的とし、鯨の分厚い脂肪分のみをはぎ取り、残りの部分は廃棄していました。

 

そして1900年代に入り石油産業が発展するに従い、これまで鯨油が果たしていた役割が石油と入れ替わり、採算がとれなくなったイギリス、アメリカは捕鯨産業から撤退していきました。

 

一方、食用として肉を利用していた日本やノルウェーは鯨油の需要がなくなった後も、食肉としての需要があったため捕鯨を続けることができました。」（引用終わり）

クジラ・イルカの疑問50 (みんなが知りたいシリーズ9)

P.S. 石油の登場によって、石炭産業などが衰退したことは聞いていましたが、イギリスやアメリカなどの捕鯨産業もなくなったことは、本書を読んで初めて知りました。 

 

セブン・シスターズを中心とする石油メジャーは、圧倒的な資本力と世界に張り巡らされたネットワーク網で、強大な政治力を持っていることで知られますが、IWCの方向性にまで石油の威力が及んでいたとは驚きです。

 

食用で捕鯨を行っている日本とノルウェーですが、ヒゲや骨を含めて全てを利用してきた日本とは違い、ノルウェーでは鯨の脂肪層を使わず、基本的には筋肉しか食べないことも本書は説明しています。

 

また、捕鯨船には加工技術の差があるらしく、技術力がそれほど高くない船の場合、船上で製品化できない部位は海に破棄することになるそうです。

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「捕鯨」=「whale fishing」＞

今回出てきた「捕鯨」の英訳は、「whale fishing」になります。

「イギリス、アメリカは捕鯨から撤退した」を英語にする場合、「Britain and the United States withdrew from whale fishing」とすればよいですね :-)。

I sometimes see news about the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

Japan and Norway are often cited as examples of whaling countries.

The material to be introduced today "Whale & Dolphin Question 50 (Japanese only)" explains many questions regarding whales and dolphins and this book also depicts details the history of whaling as follows.

“While Japan and Norway have been eating whale meat, countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States mainly used oil (whale oil) before.

And as the oil industry developed in the 1900s, the role that whale oil had played so far replaced by crude oil.

The United Kingdom and the United States withdrew from the whaling industry, because whale oil was no longer profitable.

On the other hand, Japan and Norway, which used meat for food, were able to continue whale fishing, because there was demand for meat even after the demand for whale oil ceased." (Unquote)
