When I was a business school student, I had several interviews with consulting firms.
Unlike general job hunting interviews, consulting firms have been using a way to solve issues while discussing cases that are actually close to business challenges.
I still remember the theme of one consulting firm's case interview.
I had an hour and a half discussion with an interviewer, a senior consultant, about the question "What should we do to sell more product at a small stationery store in front of elementary school?"
The material introduced today "PDCA Guidebook (Japanese only)" explains "Methods for customizing PDCA" and the following phrases of "Fermi Estimation" part were impressive.
"The most difficult part of planning is estimating expected effects.
If you've been doing it for a long time, that's fine.
However, when it comes to doing something new you have never seen before, it's not easy to estimate the expected effect in your life.
For example, if a funeral company handles pet funerals, Fermi estimates the market size as follows:
1. Number of Japanese households: 50 million households
2. Percentage of households with pets: 1/5
⇒ Total number of pets is 50 million x 1/5 = 10 million
3. Life expectancy of pets is 14 years
⇒ 10 million pets die annually ÷ 14 = 700,000
4. Ratio of pet funeral: up to 30%
⇒The annual number of pet funerals is 700,000 x 30% = 200,000
5. Pet funeral unit price: 100,000 yen (assuming no legal requirement)
⇒Pet funeral market size is 200,000 × 100,000 yen = 20 billion yen" (Unquote)
