【PDCA日記 Vol. 282「資本主義は神からの贈り物？」
私は学部生時代、ミッション系（プロテスタント）の大学に通っていたのですが、教員からよく「とにかく稼げ」と言われていました。
キリスト教では元々、利息などの資本主義的な商業主義を否定していました。
しかし、16世紀の宗教改革が行われて、プロテスタント諸国で利子所得が認められるようになりました。
そこから、カソリック諸国でも金融取引による利益追求が容認されるようになります。
今回紹介する資料「経済を読み解くための宗教史」は「宗教がわかれば経済がわかる!」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「資本主義は神からの贈り物」部分の以下のフレーズが印象的でした。
「マックス・ウェーバーという20世紀のドイツの思想家がいます。
ウェーバーの代表作は『プロテスタンティズムの倫理と資本主義の精神』です。
従来、キリスト教において、富や利財政を世俗的なものとして、忌避（きひ）し、カネに携わる商人などの職業を蔑視（べっし）する考え方がありました。
宗教改革を行ったルターやカルヴァンは『全ての職業は尊い』と主張し、『職業召命（しょうめい）』の理念を唱えます。
日常の職業労働に励むことが、プロテスタントにとっては、宗教的な務めを果たすことであり、仕事によって得られる報酬は神の恵みと考えられました。
勤労と節約によって蓄財されたカネが資本となり、近代の資本主義はそれを元に発展していく、とウェーバーは主張します。」（引用終わり）

P.S. キリスト教に限りませんが、宗教は為政者によって利用されてきた歴史を持っています。
日本で檀家（だんか）制度が始まったのは、江戸時代初期の17世紀前半です。
江戸幕府は1612年にキリスト教を禁教とし、キリスト教徒と疑われた人達がキリシタンではないことを証明するために、寺院から発行してもらった「寺請証文（てらけしょうもん）」が檀家の始まりであると言われています。
今回紹介した資料「経済を読み解くための宗教史」はキリスト教に限らず、他の宗教がどのように経済・社会に影響を与えたかについて、詳しく解説しています。

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「資本主義」 = 「capitalism」＞
今回出てきた「資本主義」の英訳は、「capitalism」になります。
「資本主義は神からの贈り物」を英語にする場合、「Capitalism is a gift from God」とすればよいですね :-)。

Weber's masterpiece is "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism".
Traditionally, in Christianity, wealth and interests were regarded as secular and were repelled and despised.
Reformed Luther and Calvin claimed that all occupations are precious and advocated the idea of vocation.
Engaged in daily vocational work was a religious task for Protestants, and the rewards earned by the work were considered God's favor.
Weber argues that money saved by labor and savings becomes capital, and that modern capitalism develops from it." (Unquote)
