私がフランスで学生生活を送っていた頃、日本と一番違うと感じたことは「とにかく人々が日光に当たろうとすること」でした。
紫外線を目の敵にしている日本とは180度違い、冬の日照時間が短いフランスでは「美白」という概念が基本的に存在しません。
フラン人にとっては、「日焼け = 休暇を楽しみ、リゾートに行けること」の証明であり、夏休みが終わると別人のように日焼けをしていた人を、ちらほら見かけたものでした。
ただ、今回紹介する資料「ルイ14世とリシュリュー―絶対王政をつくった君主と宰相」の主人公であるルイ14世の時代は今と逆であり、「日焼けしていない = 知的労働をしている証拠」と考えられていました。
本書の表紙は、有名なルイ14世の写真ですが、彼は自分を白く見せるために白いタイツを履いています。
江戸時代に描かれた浮世絵では、「白粉（おしろい）」で化粧をしている女性が登場し、日本は昔も今も美白の意識が高いようです。
現在の歌舞伎でも俳優が白粉を利用しており、江戸時代の美意識が引き継がれていることが垣間見えますね :-)。

P.S. ルイ14世はよく知られていますが、今回紹介する資料に登場するリシュリューは、日本で知名度が殆どありません。
リシュリューは、ルイ14世の父であるルイ13世に仕えた宰相です。
リシュリューはフランスの行政組織を整え、中央集権体制と絶対王政の基礎を築いた非常に有名な政治家です。
ほぼ同年代を生きた徳川家康は、リシュリューと意外な共通点があり、それはスパイ網を整備したことでした（日本では、忍者部隊 :-)。
私が戦国時代に生きていたら忍者部隊に入りたいと思っており、今の時代よりも成功する自信がありますね😊。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「知名度」 = 「name recognition」＞
今回出てきた「知名度」の英訳は、「name recognition」になります。
「知名度が低い」と伝えたい場合、「low name recognition」と言うこともできますが、「little-known（あまり知られていない）」と表現することも可能ですね :-)。
When I was spending a student life in France, the most different thing from Japan was that "People try to get suntanned".
It is 180 degrees different from Japan, because most Japanese people try to avoid ultraviolet rays.
The winter sunshine time is short in France, so there is no concept of "whitening" and getting suntanned is proof of a person who can enjoy a vacation and can go to the resort.
After summer vacation, some French friends became suntanned and I sometimes could not tell who they were because of too much sunburn.
However, the era of Louis XIV who is the main character of the material to be introduced today "Louis XIV & Richelieu (Japanese only)" has the opposite way of thinking compare to the present, and it is thought that "People who are not sunburned equal intellectual workers in office."
The cover of this book is a famous picture of Louis XIV, and he wears white tights to look himself white.
Even in the Ukiyoe painting drawn in the Edo era (1603～1868), we can see women who were making up with "white powder", so Japan seems to have a high awareness of whitening from ancient to now.

P.S. Louis XIV is well known globally, but Richelieu introduced in today's material has little profile in Japan.
Richelieu is a politician who served Louis XIII (Father of Louis XIV) and Richelieu is very famous in France, because he has organized an public organization, built a centralized system and the foundation of absolute monarchy.
Ieyasu Tokugawa (Founder of Tokugawa Shogunate) who lived nearly the same period has unexpected similarities with Richelieu, which was to establish a spy net (in Japan, a Ninja troop :-).
