「事実は小説よりも奇なり」という言葉があります。
私が学生に戻っていた頃に1,000以上読み込んだビジネスケースと比較して、実際のビジネスは更に面白く、正に「ビジネスはケースよりも奇なり」と感じながら、チャレンジングな日々を楽しみながら過ごしています :-)。
「人間が想像することは実現可能」というのはアインシュタインの名言ですが、過去の書籍に書かれている内容と似たことが実際に起こるのは結構あるようです。
今回紹介する資料「ここではそんなことは起こりえない（「It Can't Happen Here」英語のみ）」は、1930年にアメリカ人として初めてノーベル文学賞を受賞したシンクレア・ルイスによる近未来小説です。
本書では、架空のファシスト政治家バズ・ウィンドリップ（Buzz Windrip）が1936年のアメリカ大統領選挙で勝利し、民主主義を否定する一党独裁体制を確立した後のアメリカの姿を描いています。
ウィンドリップのモデルは、1928年から1932年までルイジアナ州知事を務めた後、上院議員になったヒューイ・ロング（Huey Long）であると言われています。
ロングは州知事時代、言論の自由や司法権を制限する強権的な政策を推進し、現職だったフランクリン・ルーズベルト大統領（当時）と対峙するため、1936年の大統領選挙への出馬を模索していたと言われています。
1935年9月にロングはルイジアナで襲撃を受け、帰らぬ人になったため、「ここではそんなことは起こりえない」が書店に並んだ1935年10月には、ロングが大統領になる可能性はなくなっていましたが、本書は32万部を超えるベストセラーになりました。

P.S.「ここではそんなことは起こりえない」が発刊されて80年以上が経過した2017年にドナルド・トランプ大統領が誕生し、本書は「起こりえないことが起こることを預言した資料」として注目を浴びました。
トランプ大統領の当選が決まった後、「ここではそんなことは起こりえない」は再販が決まり、アマゾンのベストセラー・ランキングに入る等、ここ数年で大きな注目を浴びています。
1935年に「ここではそんなことは起こりえない」を読んでいた人々は近未来小説ではなく、「起こりうる出来事」である「未来史（future histories）」として紙面をめくっていたのかもしれませんね :-)。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「起こりえない」 = 「it can't happen」＞
今回出てきた「起こりえない」の英訳は、「it can't happen」になります。
「起業の手続きがすべて順調にいくことなど、起こりえない」を英語にする場合、「It can't happen that all the procedures for starting a business go smoothly」とすればよいですね :-)。

There is a word that "Truth is stranger than fiction".
When I was a business school student, I read over 1,000 business cases, and interestingly I am feeling that "Business is stranger than cases" everyday.
Einstein's mentioned that "What you imagine is feasible", and it seems quite likely, because something similar occurred in reality what was written in past books.
The material to be introduced today "It Can't Happen Here" is a near future novel by Sinclair Lewis who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature for the first time as an American writer in 1930.
In this book, the imaginary Fascist politician Buzz Windrip was depicted and he won the US Presidential election in 1936.
Windrip denied democracy and he established a one-party dictatorship system.
Windlip's model is said to be a real politician, Huey Long, who became a US Senator after serving as Governor of Louisiana State from 1928 to 1932.
Long is know because of promoted policies to restrict freedom of speech and jurisdiction in the era of Louisiana Governor.
Long is said that he was seeking to run for the presidential election in 1936 to confront with former President Franklin Roosevelt.
In September 1935, Long was attacked in Louisiana and passed away.
Therefore, there was no possibility that Long became the US President in October 1935, when the book "It Can't Happen Here" was published.
"It Can't Happen Here" has become a best seller exceeding 320,000 copies then.
When President Donald Trump was elected in 2016, "It Can't Happen Here" gain attention as a "prophecy".
"It Can't Happen Here" was republished a few years ago and it was shown in Amazon's bestselling rankings.
People who were reading this book in 1935 might have not thought it as "Future Novels", but rather "Future Histories" when they were turning the page then :-).
