【PDCA日記 Vol. 316「利他的な動物もいる」】
動物は自分の身に危険が迫ると、真っ先に逃げてしまうという印象があるかもしれません。
大部分の動物は自己中心的なのですが、今回紹介する資料「入門! 進化生物学：ダーウィンからDNAが拓く新世界へ」によると、この世には利他的な動物もいるそうです。
本書の「利他的動物観」部分で、利他的な動物の例として、ウシ科のジャコウウシが挙げられています。
＜ジャコウウシ☟＞
本書によると、ジャコウウシの雄は「オオカミの攻撃に対して防衛の円陣を作り、その中に子や雌を囲い込んで守り、自らはオオカミに対峙して身を危険にさらす」そうです。
最近は、人間の親が子どもを大切にしないケースがあるようですが、利他的なジャコウウシから我々が学ぶことは多いかもしれません。

P.S. 私は大学がミッション系であったため、クラスメイトには結構クリスチャンがいました。
クリスチャンと進化論について話す場合、結構熱くなることがあります。
キリスト教では、天地創造により神が天と地を造（つく）り、人間や動物をこの世に誕生させたことになっています。
興味深いことに、進化論を唱えたダーウィンは敬虔なクリスチャンでした。
一方で、宇宙から帰還した宇宙飛行士が宗教にのめり込むケースが確認されており、科学だけでは解明が難しいことがこの世にはあるのかもしれませんね :-)。
＜Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「利他的な」=「altruistic」＞
今回出てきた「利他的な」の英訳は、「altruistic」になります。
「利他的な動物もいる」を英語にする場合、「There are altruistic animals」とすればよいですね :-)。

You may have the impression that animals will escape first when they are in danger.
Most of the animals are self-sufficient, but according to the material introduced today "Introduction! Evolutionary Biology: From Darwin to the New World Created by DNA (Japanese only)," there are altruistic animals in this world.
One example of an altruistic animal is the Musk Ox.
According to this book, the Musk ox male creates a circle of defense against the wolf's attack, encloses and protects the child and female in it, and confronts the wolf and puts himself at risk.
Recently, it seems that some human parents do not care for their children, and we may learn a lot from the altruistic Musk ox.
