【PDCA日記 Vol. 391「全世界を敵に回しても生き残る」】
私はニューヨークに駐在していたことがあり、マンハッタンはユダヤ人比率が高いこともあって、ユダヤ教などを研究したことがあります。
よく知られていることとして、ユダヤ人の教育熱心さがあります。
英語で「Jewish Mom（ユダヤ人の母親）」と言えば、「教育熱心さ」を意味するくらいであり、ユダヤ人が子供の教育にかける意気込みが感じられます。
「知識は奪われない」とユダヤ人が口にすることがありますが、歴史的に迫害を受けてきた彼らが世界のどこに行っても生き延びるための知恵として、教育に行きついた結果なのかもしれません。
今回紹介する資料「イスラエルとユダヤ人 考察ノート」は、元外交官の視点からイスラエルとユダヤ人を分析しており、以下のフレーズが印象的でした。
「『全世界に同情されながら滅亡するよりも、たとえ全世界を敵に回しても生き残る』という国是をもっていても、核戦争のハードルを低くし、人類を破滅の瀬戸際に追い込むシナリオをイスラエルはとらなかった。
しかし、ハマスの手に核兵器が渡る場合、イスラエルのように自制するという保証はどこにもない。
イランが核兵器を保有した場合、核の恫喝を用いて『イスラエル国家を地図上から抹消する』という方針を推し進めてくる危険がある。
ヨムキプール戦争のときと同様に、潜在敵国イランから奇襲攻撃を受ける可能性をイスラエルは常に意識しているのだ。」（引用終わり）

P.S. ユダヤ人のもう一つの特徴として、大家族であることがあります。
大家族文化も、ユダヤ人にまつわる迫害の歴史が影響しているのかもしれません。
ただ、私も大家族であり、どのユダヤ人にも家族の多さで負けたことはありませんね :-)。
＜Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「全世界」=「whole world」＞
今回出てきた「全世界」の英訳は、「whole world」になります。
「全世界を敵に回しても生き残る」を英語にする場合、「Survive even if the whole world became an enemy」とすればよいですね :-)。

You can tell how enthusiastic Jewish people are about education just by knowing the meaning of "Jewish Mom".
The material introduced today "Israel & Jews Study Note (Japanese only)" analyzes Israel and Jews from the perspective of a former diplomat, and the following phrases were impressive.
"Israel has a scenario that lowers the hurdles of a nuclear war and drives humanity to the brink of ruin, even with the national motto that 'Survives even if the whole world is enemies rather than being destroyed while being assimilated to the whole world.'" (Unquote)
