PDCA (plan-do-check-action) Diary Vol. 497 "Did cats domesticate humans?"】

The material introduced today "Beast damage archipelago (Japanese only)" has a catchphrase "Too many Japanese wild animals", and the following phrases were impressive in the part "Cat is a beast damage! Nature killed by wild pets".

"In Japan, apart from the cat problem on relatively large islands, there are about 20 small islands called 'cat islands' that have more cats than residents.

Some islands have become tourist destinations due to an increase in the number of visitors looking for cats, but the cats on such islands are also feral cats.

The impact on the island's ecosystem cannot be read.

I explained that cats are different from other pets in that they do not lose their wildness when bred.

Some people explain that point, 'Cats are not domesticated by humans, cats accustomed humans'.

Rather than trying to get accustomed to cats, they said that cats sneaked up on human society and accept them to live with them.

Imagine a case where when food such as grains was stored in a warehouse in a village, many mice began to appear, and cats approached the village aiming for that.

It is a hypothesis that humans also cherished cats that catch mice (Humans became attached to cats).

Humans have come to live in harmony with cats.

I learned that cats do not depend on humans, but use humans to secure food.

Therefore, it did not lose its wildness.

Humans also liked it.

However, the impact of cats on ecosystems has become a global problem.

There are many studies on the habits of cats, but according to 'Cat Wars', 70 domestic cats bring home a total of 1,090 prey in a year in an experiment conducted in the United States.

535 mammals and 297 birds were killed by 70 domestic cats.

Many mammals were rodents that were easy to breed, but their effects on birds were serious.

'Cat Wars' estimates that there are 44 million domestic cats in the United States to say the least, and that more than one billion wild birds are killed annually across the country.

In addition to this, there are also feral cats, so the number of prey killed by cats may be several times that number." (Unquote)
