「奴隷が解放されれば文明が崩壊すると考えられていた」を英語にする場合、「It was thought that civilization would collapse if slaves were released」とすればよいですね :-)。

PDCA (plan-do-check-action) Diary Vol. 525 "How do you decide what is good?"】

The material introduced today "Outgrowing God: A Beginner's Guide" explains "Science makes the way", and the following phrases were impressive in the part "What is good and how do you decide?"

"The moral values of the 21st century we live in are clearly different from those of 100 years ago.

What was widespread in the 18th century was even more different.

At that time, possession of slaves was usually done by people (unfortunately my ancestors were also in Jamaica), and it was thought that civilization would collapse if slaves were released.

The great Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States and the main drafter of the Constitution, also owned slaves.

The 1st president, George Washington, had slaves as well.

I hope at least they (and my ancestors) were unaware of the horrific environment of ships transporting slaves from West Africa.

By the way, it wasn't just Western whites who brought slaves from Africa.

Europeans took slaves out of West Africa, while Arabs took them out of East Africa.

Swahili, the main language in East Africa just below the equator, has developed as the language of the Arab slave trade.

There are many words in this language that originate from Arabic.

Not only did African chiefs capture slaves and sell them to European and Arab slave traders, they also used slaves.

Not surprisingly, the moral law of the Bible was from that era, so slave ownership is not blamed there.

The strong aversion to slavery we feel today is just one example of a change in the 'air'.

Abraham Lincoln, also a particularly admired president in the United States, was exactly the same age as Charles Darwin and was born on the same day in February 1809.

Darwin vehemently opposed slavery, and Lincoln actually released slavery in the United States.

Still, neither Darwin nor Lincoln would have dreamed that Africans were on par with the 'civilized race'.

And President Lincoln said in 1858 as follows:

I am not in favor of, and have never been, in favor of bringing about social and political equality between whites and blacks.

I don't agree or agree with making blacks voters or juries, giving blacks eligibility for election, or marrying whites.

And I would also like to say that there are physical differences between whites and blacks, which makes it impossible for these two races to live together in a social and political position forever.

Unless they can live that way, they have to move up and down while they are together, and like everyone else, I'm in favor of white people.

---

In fact, no matter what the 'air' of the 19th century was, there is something completely different around us today.

It is an incompetent historian who accuses Lincoln, Darwin and Huxley of being racists.

As human beings of that era, they were close to a race-biased way of thinking.

They lived in the 19th century.

If they were born two centuries later, they would have been horrified by the two quotes above." (Unquote)
