【PDCA日記 Vol. 623「美醜の基準は複数ある」】
私は学生時代、予備校講師のアルバイトをしていたことがあり、高校生の保護者の方と話をする機会がありました。
そこで良く耳にしたのは、「うちの子は努力が足りないんです」という言葉でした。
日本では、「努力することが美徳」という考えが強いですが、何が美徳であるかについては、国によって違いがあるようです。
私が以前働いていた米系金融機関は、結果が見えやすい数字の世界ということもあり、「結果こそが全て」という感じで、収益目標さえ達成すれば、「会社に来なくても良い」という雰囲気すら流れていました。
日本とアメリカの考え方について、どちらが良いとは言えませんし、それぞれ一長一短だと思います。
一方、フランスでは「努力せずに結果を出すことが素晴らしい」という考えがあるようでした。
私がフランスで学生に戻っていた時、ある新聞の記事を読んで、面白いと感じたものです。
その記事によると、子供を持つ親たちは、一生懸命勉強して良い成績を出すよりも、努力せず結果を出す方を好むそうです（あくまでこの記事の話😊)。
フランスでは勉強せずに良い成績を出すと、「うちの子は勉強しなくても、成績が良い！」と親は大変喜ぶそうです。
今回紹介する資料「ことわざ比較の文化社会学 日英仏の民衆知表現」は「110のことわざに示される民衆知を比較社会学の視点から読み解く」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「あばたもえくぼ」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「あばたもえくぼ
英：Love is blind. あるいは Love sees no faults.
仏：Il n'y a piont de laides amours.
日本語では、相手の顔にある醜いあばたでさえも、惚れた欲目からすれば可愛く見える。
スタンダールの『恋愛とは美しい誤解である』でもよく知られている。
英語では直訳的に、『恋は盲目である』と表現したり、『愛にはどんな欠点も見えない』ともいわれる。
フランス語では『恋の相手に醜い者はいない』と表現される。
laide は英語の ugly に相当する『醜い』という形容詞である。
文法的には ne...point で、少しも～でない。
amours は恋人。
醜いと判断する基準は人それぞれに異なるが、ひいき目でみれば、醜いものも美しく見える。
気に入れば、その相手は素晴らしく思える。
ただし日常的には、美醜の基準が複数あるため、惚れて通う相手も複数になる恐れが出てくる。
浮気や不倫などが無くならないのも、美しさを感じさせる多様性が、顔かたち、人柄、能力、知性などに分かれてそれぞれの判断基準があるためであろう。
一方では顔かたちで気に入って、他方ではその知性を愛することもありえる。

P.S. 日本企業で働く外国人にとって、社内通知などが日本語のみで出され、英語で配信されないことが苦痛に感じられるようです。
「英語だけで業務に問題はありません」と採用ページでうたっている企業であっても、中に入ってみると日本語だらけで、英語だけでは生活できないというパターンもあるようです。
言葉の違いは文化の違いであるため、日本全体の英語力向上は永遠の課題なのかもしれませんね。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「美徳」=「virtue」＞
今回出てきた「美徳」の英訳は、「virtue」になります。
「何が美徳であるかについては、国によって違いがある」を英語にする場合、「There are country differences in what is a virtue」とすればよいですね😊。
The material introduced today "Cultural Sociology of Comparative Sociology of Japanese, English and French (Japanese only)" has a catchphrase "Understanding the popular wisdom shown in 110 proverbs from the perspective of comparative sociology", and the following phrases were impressive in the part "Love is blind".
"Japanese: Pockmarks can be dimples.
English: Love is blind. Or Love sees no faults.
France: Il n'y a piont de laides amours.
In Japanese, even the ugly pockmark on the other person's face looks cute to the lust of love like a dimple.
It is also well known in Stendhal's 'Love is a beautiful misunderstanding.'
In English, it is literally expressed as 'love is blind' or 'love does not see any flaws'.
In French, it is expressed as 'no one is ugly in love'.
Laide is an adjective, which is equivalent to ugly in English.
Amours are lovers.
The criteria for judging ugliness differ from person to person, but if you look at it with your own eyes, ugly things look beautiful.
If you fall in love with someone, he or she looks great.
However, on a daily basis, there are multiple standards of beauty and ugliness, so there is a risk that there will be multiple people who fall in love with them.
The reason why cheating and infidelity do not disappear is that the diversity that makes us feel beauty is divided into face shape, personality, ability, intellect, etc., and each has its own judgment criteria.
On the one hand, you may like it in the form of a face, and on the other hand, you may love its intellect.
It is also the fun of the world." (Unquote)
