最近は、アメリカン・ドリームの話を聞くことが少なくなりました。
今回紹介する資料「ヒルビリー・エレジー」は、アメリカの貧困層に生まれ育った著者が海兵隊、イェール大学法科大学院に進み、人生を立て直す物語で読み物として面白いだけではなく、仕事や人生で成功に近づくための処方箋も示してくれています。
印象的だったのは、著者が海兵隊に所属していた時に感じたという以下のフレーズです。
「リーダーシップは、部下から尊敬されることによって初めて身につくもので、威張り散らすことで獲得できるものではない。」（引用終わり）
私が前職で目にした「リーダーシップの反面教師」として、「聞いていないから関係ない」というセリフが口癖だった上級管理職の人がいました。
管理職は管轄部門で発生したことに対してすべての責任があり、「聞いていないから関係ない」ということは、リーダーシップとは逆の言動であると感じたものです。
「ヒルビリー・エレジー」でもう一つ面白かったのは、「裕福な人たちは何をもっているのか？成功者たちの社会習慣、ルールのちがうゲーム」部分の以下のフレーズです。
「成功者たちは、ふつうの人とはまったくルールのちがうゲームをしていることに気がついた。彼らは、会社から面接に呼んでもらうために、履歴書を書いて応募したりはしない。代わりにネットワークを使うのだ。
経済学者が『社会関係資本』と呼ぶものには、計り知れない価値がある。社会関係資本とは、『自分が周囲の人や組織とのあいだに持つネットワークには、実際に経済的な価値がある』ことを意味する。
このネットワークは、私たちを会うべき人に引き合わせてくれたり、価値ある情報やチャンスを与えてくれたりする。ネットワークがなければ、自分ひとりですべてをこなさなければならない。」（引用終わり）

P.S. 先日のPDCAカフェで、「海外留学は役に立ちますか？」という質問を頂き、「ネットワーク構築という意味では役立つでしょう」と回答しました。
私は留学先がフランスだったということもあって、地理的に近い中東やアフリカの富裕層や要人の子息と一緒にグループワークをする機会がありました。
「中東の財務大臣の娘」、「アフリカの副大統領の甥」、「石油王の息子」などがゴロゴロおり、彼らはあの中で社会関係資本を築き、既にかなり成功しています💰。
「Mr. PDCA がフランスに行って良かったことは何かって？」
PDCA日記のネタが、いっぱいできたことに決まっているじゃないですか😊。
そのおかげで、他部署の多くの人たちと知り合えましたからね（社会関係資本の構築！プライスレス！）。
これだけで、〇〇万ユーロを留学費用として使った意味がありましたね（〇〇にいくらが入るかは想像してね😊。
ホテルの高級ビュッフェに行くと、「元を取らなければ！」と食べまくる人を見かけますが、海外のビジネススクールに行った人で成功者が多いのは、「留学費用の元を取らなければ！」と必死で働くことが要因かもしれません（機会費用【2年間働いていた場合に得られたであろう収入】も莫大！）。
「留学するべきかどうか」の判断はその人次第ですが、自費でビジネススクールに留学した人で後悔している人を見たことはありません（元を取らないといけないから、後悔している暇がそもそもないのよね😊。

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「元を取る」 = 「recover the initial cost」＞
今回出てきた「元を取る」の英訳はいくつか候補がありますが、「recover the initial cost」が一つの表現方法になります。
「元を取るために、彼はブッフェ・ランチで大量に食べ物を胃に詰め込んだ」を英語にする場合、「To recover the initial cost, he packed a lot of food in his stomach at the buffet lunch」とすればよいですね😊。
The material to be introduced today "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis" is written by the author who was born and raised in the poor family in the United States.
However, he entered the Marine, and went to Yale University law school, then rebuilt his life.
I was impressed with the following phrases that the author felt when he was belonging to the Marine.
"Leadership will be acquired for the first time by being respected from subordinates, and it cannot be earned by screeching others." (Unquote)
Another interesting thing in this book is a section of "Social customs of successful people, game with different rules" that explains what wealthy people have.
"I realized that the successful people played games completely different from ordinary people in a rule. They did not write a resume and apply for a job to be called by the company for an interview. They use the network instead.
What economists call 'social capital' has immense value. Social capital means that it is actually economical to the network that wealth people own with acquaintances and organizations around them.
This network is worth having and will bring them to people they should meet, give them valuable information and opportunities. In case you do not have this network, you need to do everything by yourself." (Unquote)

P.S. At PDCA cafe the other day, I was asked that "Is studying abroad useful?" and I responded "It was valuable in terms of network construction".
I had opportunities to do group work with children of wealthy people from the Middle East and Africa, which are geographically close to France where I was studying from 2010 to 2011.
I encountered many children of powerful people like "Daughter of the Finance Minister of the Middle East", "Nephew of the Vice President of Africa", "Son of the king of oil", and they have built social capital in France and they have already been quite successful.
I am not sure whether I am successful or not, but my decision to study in France was very valuable, because I could find a lot of stories for PDCA diary😊.
Thanks to PDCA diary, I got acquainted with many professional from other industries (Building social capital! Priceless!).
