今回紹介する資料「「性」の進化論講義」は、「生物史を変えたオスとメスの謎」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「メスをめぐって生死をかけるオス同士の競争」部分の以下のフレーズが印象的でした。
「私はこれまでに、『同種の個体同士で殺し合いをする生物はヒトだけだ』という話を、何度か聞いたことがある。
でも、そんなことはない。
私たち以外の動物でも、同種の個体同士で争って、その結果、相手を殺してしまうことは、決して珍しいことではない。
そういう争いの中でもっとも多いのは、メスをめぐるオス同士の争いだ。
アフリカゾウのオスは、メスをめぐって激しく争うことが知られている。
争いは激しく、半分以上のオスはまったく子を残せないようだ。
30歳ぐらいから争いに参加できるようになるが、勝つのはたいてい45歳以上の牙が長くて体が大きいオスである。
ゾウの仲間には大きな牙を持っているものが多く、約100万年前に生きていたアナンクスの牙は長さが4メートルに達することもあった。
牙が大きいほど強力な武器となるため、ゾウの仲間では巨大な牙が進化したのだろう。
このようなオス同士の競争は、性淘汰においてよく見られるパターンの1つである。」（引用終わり）

P.S. アフリカゾウの寿命は60歳から70歳くらいのようで、現在の人間とそれほど変わりませんね。
また、「45歳くらいのアフリカゾウが強い」という本書の記述は、ビジネス界にも似ていると感じました。
人それぞれ意見はあると思いますが、私は企業経営者の最適年齢は40代であると考えています。
アフリカに行く予定はありませんが、訪れた際はアフリカゾウを見に行きたいですね😊。
また、アフリカはフランス語が通じる地域が多く、フランス語の勉強はこれからも続けていきます。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「最適年齢」 = 「optimal age」＞
今回出てきた「最適年齢」の英訳は、「optimal age」になります。
「企業経営者の最適年齢は40代である」を英語で表現する場合、「The optimal age for business owners is in their 40s」とすればよいですね😊。
