【PDCA日記 Vol. 1,204「忍者はいなかった」】
来日した外国人に人気のスポットとして、忍者絡みのアトラクションがあります。
忍者が料理を運んでくるレストランや、忍者体験が味わえるアミューズメント施設に外国人が大挙して押し寄せるシーンがニュースで取り上げられることもあります。
「自分は日本企業でずっと働いていくから英語は必要ない」とコメントする人がいますが、株主や取引先には外国資本のところが入っていたりしており、どのような業界であっても英語は必須になっています。
今回紹介する資料「図解 忍者」は「ただの人間である忍者たちの努力と智恵を、図解でわかりやすく解説!」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「忍者はいなかった」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「戦国の世の同時代史料（その当時の人が、書いた文書）をどれだけ読んでも、『忍者』という言葉が出てくることはない。
では、戦国の世に忍者は存在しなかったのか。
戦国時代は、数多くの大名が、自国を保ち、敵国を滅ぼすために、戦争を繰り返していた時代だ。
そんな時代に、諜報を行う人間が不要なはずがない。
もちろん、ちゃんと存在していた。
ただし、別の名前でだ。
しかも、地方ごとに異なる名前で呼ばれ、全国で通じる名称は存在しなかった。
忍び、細作（さいさく）、軒猿、草、嗅ぎ、透波（すっぱ）、突破、乱破（らっぱ）、忍兵（にんぺい）など、名前は様々だ。
ちなみに透波は、現代でも使う『すっぱ抜き』の語源でもある。
透波のように情報を抜いてくるからだ。
また、突破は、障害を勢いよく破る『とっぱ』の語源となっている。」（引用終わり）
ニューヨークに住んでいた時、アメリカ人に私が日本出身であることを紹介すると、「オー、ニンジャ！」と叫ぶ人がいたことを覚えています。
アメリカ人の中には、未だに日本人の多くが着物を着ており、忍者が存在すると勘違いしている人もいるようですね😊。

P.S. 日本で忍者部隊が活躍していた1500年代後半、フランスの絶対王政を構築した有名な政治家であるリシュリューが誕生しています（1585年 - 1642年）。
リシュリューは日本で知名度が殆どありませんが、ルイ14世の父であるルイ13世に仕えた宰相です。
リシュリューはフランスの行政組織を整え、中央集権体制と絶対王政の基礎を築いた非常に有名な政治家です。
リシュリューとほぼ同年代を生きた徳川家康には、意外な共通点がありました。
それはスパイ網の整備でした（日本では、忍者部隊😊)。
私が戦国時代に生きていたら忍者部隊に入りたいと思っており、今の時代よりも成功する自信がありますね😊。
リシュリューに興味がある人には、「ルイ14世とリシュリュー―絶対王政をつくった君主と宰相」という本を手に取ってみましょう。
面白いことに、「ルイ14世とリシュリュー―絶対王政をつくった君主と宰相」という資料の主人公であるルイ14世の時代は今と逆であり、「日焼けしていない = 知的労働をしている証拠」と考えられていました。
本書の表紙は、有名なルイ14世の写真ですが、彼は自分を白く見せるために白いタイツを履いています。
江戸時代に描かれた浮世絵では、「白粉（おしろい）」で化粧をしている女性が登場し、日本は昔も今も美白の意識が高いようです。
現在の歌舞伎でも俳優が白粉を利用しており、江戸時代の美意識が引き継がれていることが垣間見えますね😊。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「諜報」 = 「intelligence」＞
今回出てきた「諜報」の英訳は、「intelligence」になります。
「忍者は諜報を行う人間だった」を英語で表現する場合、「Ninja was a human being who did intelligence」とすればよいですね😊。

P.S. When I was spending a student life in France, the most different thing from Japan was that "People try to get suntanned".
It is 180 degrees different from Japan, because most Japanese people try to avoid ultraviolet rays.
The winter sunshine time is short in France, so there is no concept of "whitening" and getting suntanned is proof of a person who can enjoy a vacation and can go to the resort.
After summer vacation, some French friends became suntanned and I sometimes could not tell who they were because of too much sunburn.
However, the era of Louis XIV who is the main character of the material to be introduced today "Louis XIV & Richelieu (Japanese only)" has the opposite way of thinking compare to the present, and it is thought that "People who are not sunburned equal intellectual workers in office."
The cover of this book is a famous picture of Louis XIV, and he wears white tights to look himself white.
Even in the Ukiyoe painting drawn in the Edo era (1603～1868), we can see women who were making up with "white powder", so Japan seems to have a high awareness of whitening from ancient to now.
