私の実家には神棚と仏壇が両方あったのですが、外国人から見ると一つの家に神と仏がいることについて、不思議に思うようです。
江戸時代に寺院は強力な力を持ち、縁日や境内で色々なビジネスを行うことで、経済力も手に入れることになります。
ただ、明治維新が起こると、今度は神社が盛り返し、立場が逆転することになります。
今回紹介する資料「宗教で読み解く日本史」は、「理由がわかって全体像が見えてくる」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「世界最初のツアー会社は日本にあった？」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「18世紀後半から、庶民レベルで『旅行』が全国的なブームになりました。
湯治・物見遊山、つまり観光旅行が広くおこなわれるようになったのです。
江戸時代の旅行には、それなりの手続きが必要でした。
人口の大部分の農民は、基本的に自由な移動は認められていません。
ところが、社寺へのお参りは、比較的容易に旅行の許可が出ました。
旅行には『通行手形』が必要で、武士の場合は各藩の許可、農民は村役人、町人は町役人の許可が必要でしたが、農民・町人はそもそも寺請制度で存在を寺院自体が把握しているので、檀家寺・菩提寺の許可で『通行手形』が発行されました。
これ、現在のパスポートによく似ています。
江戸時代は幕藩体制ですから、さまざまな大名の領地を通過せねばならず、関所などもたくさんありませいた。
江戸時代には庶民の経済力も向上し、庶民の生活に余裕が出てきていました。
宗教も来世の極楽往生を願う中世型の信仰から、現世利益を願う信仰に変わってきています。
農民は豊作を祈願し、商売人は商売繁盛を願うようになり、寺院・神社への参拝が元禄時代以降増加しつつありました。
そのため、旅行の目的に『寺社参拝』を記しておくと、武家の女性以外はたいてい許可が出ました。」（引用終わり）

P.S. 現在でも、縁日は神社や寺院の周辺で行われることが多いですが、これは昔からの習慣のようです。
「縁日」とは、神や仏に「縁のある日」のことであり、現在でもお祭りの時に縁日があるのは、豊作を神に祈ったりする特別な日であることに由来します。
私は子供の頃から、縁日が苦手で、「高い、衛生的とは言い難い、それほど美味しくない」という3重苦のところに皆が行きたがる理由が、よく分かりませんでした。
昔から私は、変わっていたということなのでしょうね😊。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「庶民」 = 「ordinary people」＞
今回出てきた「庶民」の英訳は、「ordinary people」になります。
「江戸時代には、庶民の経済力も向上した」を英語にすると、「During the Edo period, the economic power of the ordinary people also improved」となりますね😊。

In the Edo era, temples have a strong power, and by doing various businesses, they allso gained economic power.
When the Meiji Restoration takes place in 1868, shrines revived and the position was reversed from temples.
The material introduced today "Japanese History by Religion (Japanese only)" has a catchphrase of "You can understand the reason and see the whole picture of Japanese history" and the following phrases were impressive in the part "Is the world's first tour company in Japan?"
"From the late 18th century, travel has become a nationwide boom at the level of ordinaly people in Japan.
Hot springs and sightseeing trips have become widely practiced.
Traveling in the Edo period required some procedures.
Most farmers in the population are basically not allowed free movement.
However, it was relatively easy to get permission to visit shrines and temples.
In the Edo era, the economic power of the ordinary people improved, and the people's lives became more affordable.
Religion is changing from a medieval style of worship in the afterlife to a style of worship in this current world.
Farmers prayed for good harvests, and traders wished for prosperous business, and worship at temples and shrines had been increasing since the late 17th century." (Unquote)
