【PDCA日記 Vol. 1,216「イギリス最大の屈辱」】
イギリスで国民投票が実施され、EU離脱が決まったことは2016年最大級の出来事でした。
しかしながら、EU離脱はイギリスの長い歴史の1ページに過ぎず、過去にもっと衝撃の強い出来事がありました。
今回紹介する資料「英国人記者が見た連合国戦勝史観の虚妄」は、第二次世界大戦中に日本がシンガポールを陥落させたことが、「イギリス最大の屈辱」だったと述べています。
シンガポールが陥落した当時、イギリス首相のだったチャーチルは日本の軍事作戦を予測していました。
ただ、チャーチルは「日本軍にイギリスを凌駕する攻撃力はない」と日本の実力を過小評価する固定観念をぬぐい去れませんでした。
その結果、シンガポール陥落などの大惨事を招いたことになります。
チャーチルは自書の中でシンガポール陥落について、「イギリス軍の歴史上最悪の惨事であり、最大の降伏だった」と述べています。
また、「シンガポール陥落はイギリスにとって、植民地支配の終わりを象徴していた」とも、今回紹介する資料「英国人記者が見た連合国戦勝史観の虚妄」は解説しています。
イギリスにとって、それほどシンガポール陥落のショックは大きかったのです。
第二次世界大戦の敗戦国として、日本は現在もバッシング対象になることがあります。

私は2010年にロンドンに行きましたが、その時は中華街で麺類ばかり食べていました。
世界中どこに行っても大都市には中華街があるため、食事に困った場合は麺類に頼るという作戦があります。
ロンドンの中華街は歴史があることもあって、ラーメン系が中々美味しかったですね🍜。

今回出てきた「屈辱」の英訳は、「humiliation」になります。
「イギリス最大の屈辱」を英語で表現する場合、「Greatest humiliation in the UK」とすればよいですね😊。

"The fall of Singapore symbolized the end of colonial rule for Britain," this book explains.
For Britain, the shock of Japan's suppression of Singapore was so great.
As a defeated country in World War II, Japan may still be subject to bashing.
The author of this material is the British, but he is the former Tokyo Bureau chief of the New York Times, and there are many places that show Japanese views.
This book is also worth reading, knowing that some British people have a different opinion than most people think.

No matter where you go in the world, there is Chinatown in big cities, so if you have trouble eating, you have a strategy to rely on noodles.
Because Chinatown in London has a long history, the ramen noodles were delicious 🍜.
