【PDCA日記 Vol. 1,384「銀がドルだった日」】

 

現在のアメリカは、基軸通貨である米ドルを発行する権利を持っており、フランスのシャルル・ド・ゴール元大統領は、これを「べらぼうな特権」と揶揄したことで知られています。

 

日本の通貨が基軸通貨になった歴史はありませんが、銀が基軸通貨だった16世紀、現在の島根県にある石見銀山で大量の銀が生産されていたことによって、日本は世界の銀産出の3割程度を握っていたようです。

今回紹介する資料「自分の半径5mから日本の未来と働き方を考えてみよう会議」は、16世紀の日本経済の状況を詳しく解説しており、部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。

「1600年前後に日本のGDPの世界シェアは一度ピークをつけ、4～5%になっています。

これは人口が急増したことに加えて石見銀山という、世界有数の銀山があったからです。

日本の銀産出量は16世紀には世界の銀の3割ぐらいのシェアを誇っていました。」（引用終わり）

P.S. そういえば、数年前「ビットコインが米ドルになる」と誰かが言っていましたが、最近は耳にしなくなりました。

通貨の要件として、乱高下しないことがあると言われていますが、ビットコインは価格の安定性が担保されていないため、日常的な利用にはあまり向いていないのかもしれませんね :-)。

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「基軸通貨」=「key currency」＞

今回出てきた「基軸通貨」の英訳は、「key currency」になります。

「Key currency」を直訳すると、「鍵通貨」になりますが、「鍵となる通貨＝基軸通貨」というわけですね :-)。

Today, the United States has the right to issue the key currency, the US dollar, and former French President Charles de Gaulle is known for deceiving it as an “unreasonable privilege”.

There is no history that the Japanese currency became the key currency.

However, in the 16th century, when silver was the key currency in the world, Japan produced a large amount of silver in the Iwami Ginzan silver mine and it produced about 30%.

The material to be introduced today “Let's think about the future of Japan (Japanese only)” explains in detail the situation of the Japanese economy in the 16th century, and the following phrases were impressive.

“Around 1600, Japan's global share of GDP once peaked and reaching 4 to 5%.

This is because there was a world-leading silver mine called Iwami Ginzan in addition to the rapid increase in population.

Japan's silver production was about 30% of the world's silver in the 16th century." (Unquote)
