日本では、国民投票と言ってもあまりピンと来ないかもしれませんが、欧州では身近なものだったりします。
スイスでは、定期的（平均年4回）に国民投票が行われており、過去にベーシックインカムの導入や多国籍企業の法人課税に関する国民投票が実施されました。
2015年にはボリビア、ニュージーランド、2016年にはタイで国民投票が行われ、欧州以外でも、盛んに実施されるようになっています。
日本で国民投票が実施されたことはありませんが、2015年、2020年に大阪市で行われた住民投票を、全国規模でやるようなイメージでしょう。
日本で行われる最初の国民投票は、憲法改正に伴う可能性が高いと思われますが、その際のプロセスなどを今回紹介する資料「超早わかり 国民投票法入門」は詳しく解説しています。
戦後80年近くが経過し、現在の日本の政権は憲法改正を目指していますが、今回紹介する資料「超早わかり 国民投票法入門」に目を通しておくと、参考になるかもしれませんね :-)。

P.S. 最近は、国会で審議される法案について、SNSを利用してフォロワーの意見を聞く議員が出始めています。
直接民主主義に近いやり方かもしれませんが、この手法を用いている政党が今後どれだけの支持を伸ばしていくか目が離せませんね :-)。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「国民投票」=「referendum」＞
今回出てきた「国民投票」を英語にすると、「referendum」になります。
「国民投票が行われる日は来るのか？」を英語にする場合、「Will the day when the referendum be held come?」とすればよいですね :-)。

In Japan, the referendum may not be common, but in Europe it is familiar.
In Switzerland, referendums are held regularly (on average four times a year), and in the past, referendums on the introduction of basic income and corporate taxation of multinational corporations have been held.
Referendums were held in Bolivia and New Zealand in 2015 and in Thailand in 2016, and are becoming more popular outside of Europe.
The referendum has never been held in Japan, but the first referendum to be held is likely to be accompanied by a constitutional amendment.
