【PDCA日記 Vol. 1,944「英語は勉強ではなく使うもの」】
PDCAカフェで時々耳にする質問の一つとして、「どうすれば英語は上達しますか？」というものがあります。
私からのお勧めは、英語を勉強するのではなく「使う場」に身を置くことです。
一番良いのは、英語圏に物理的に引越しをして、そこで働くことです。
「そんなことはできない」と思われる方がいるかもしれませんが、やろうと思えばできるはずです。
海外拠点を持つ企業に勤務している人であれば、かなりの確率で外に行くことができると考えています。
要は行動力であり、「とりあえずやってみる」という気持ちで動くことが重要でしょう。
今回紹介する資料「英語多読」は、英語学習について「すべての悩みは量が解決する」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「分からないことはなかったことにする」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「分からないところは見なかったことにします。
なかったことにすればいいんです。」（引用終わり）
本書が述べている方法も一つだと思いますが、 私が大学時代に受けた英語の授業では、「分からない単語は推測しなさい」と教わりました。
英語の場合、周りの文脈からもある程度は単語の意味を推測することができ、辞書で調べる前に推測をしておくだけで、記憶力を高めることができます。

P.S. 英語の勉強方法は色々で、長続きするためには今回紹介した資料「英語多読」のすすめる手法も一つでしょう。
本書を読むことも英語の勉強になると思いますが、やはりおすすめは英語を使わざるをえない状況に身を置くことですね。
実際に行ってみるとチャレンジングなこともありますが、後で考えると結局はプラスになります :-)。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「推測する」 = 「guess」＞
今回出てきた「推測する」の英訳は、「guess」となります。
大学時代の英語の講師が、分からない場合は出てきたら「Guess, guess!（推測ですよ、推測！）」と繰り返し言っていました。
そのおかげで、今も私は分からない英単語が出てきたら、推測をした上で辞書（スマホ）を引くようにしています😊。

My recommendation is not to study English, but to put yourself in a place to use English.
The best thing is to physically move to an English-speaking country and work there.
You might think that you can't do that, but that would be possible if you really would like to do.
In case you are working at companies with overseas offices, the possibility of overseas assignment becomes much higher
The material to be introduced today “English Extensive Reading (Japanese only)” has a catchphrase of “All troubles can be solved for English learning" and the following phrases were impressive.
“In case you see the English words that you are not familiar, you just ignore them." (Unquote)
I think that ignoring unknown English words is one way as this book describes.
However, I was taught to guess when I see English words I don't understand at English class in the US.
In English, you can guess the meaning of a word to some extent from the surrounding context, and you can improve your memory by just guessing before looking it up in the dictionary.
