【PDCA日記 Vol. 2,095「教室に座っているより動くべき？」】
私の好きな映画に、「ソーシャル・ネットワーク」があります。
Facebook創業者が、ハーバード大学の寮でシステム開発をする場面から、シリコンバレーで成功するまでを描いた物語です。
この作品の中で、伝説の投資家であるピーター・ティールが登場します。
ティールはPayPal創業者としても知られており、現在も様々な個人や企業に投資を行っています。
ティールの考え方に興味がある方は、「ゼロ・トゥ・ワン」という本がお勧めです。
ティールは大学関係者と対立しており、メディアで話題になっています。
ティールは「大学悪玉論」を展開し、大学を退学して新しいことを始める若者に10万ドルを与える「ティール・フェローシップ」を、2011年から行っています。

ティールは1998年にPayPalを設立するまで、法律事務所や投資銀行で働いたのですが、組織で働いていた期間について「人生で最も無駄な時間だった」と酷評しています。
ティール・フェローシップを設立した背景として、以下のような考えがあるようです。
「アメリカでは、授業料支払いのために多くの学生が莫大なローンを背負っている。
卒業後、ローン返済のために高額報酬を受け取れるつまらない仕事に従事しなければならない。
このコストは社会全体で莫大であり、無駄である。
新しいことを始めたい若者は教室に座っているのではなく、自分で新しいことを始めるべきだ。」（ティールの考え方要約）

ティール・フェローシップが設立されてから、約15年が経過しました。
ビットコインに次ぐ規模に成長した暗号資産イーサリアムの創設者に投資する等、実績は出てきているようです。
ただ、ティール・フェローシップの支援を受け、事業を開始した後、すぐに破産に追い込まれた若者もいます。
大学関係者は、「ティールが若者を破滅に追い込んでいる」と批判しています。
私からすると、大学関係者のコメントはポジショントークのようにも見えます。
ティールの助言を受け、全ての大学生が学校を辞めて起業してしまうと、大学で働く人の仕事がなくなるからです。
色々な意見がありますが、このような議論が生まれているアメリカは改めてすごい国だと思いました。
アメリカの副大統領であるバンスは、ティールの会社で働いていたことがあります。
バンスが上院議員に出馬した際、ティールは重要な支援者でした。
大学批判を展開していたティールの支援を受けたバンスがいるトランプ政権が、ハーバード大学等と対峙しているのは必然なのかもしれません🌞

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「破滅させる」 = 「ruin」＞
今回出てきた「破滅させる」の英訳は、「ruin」になります。
「ティールが若者を破滅に追い込んでいる」を英語で表現する場合、「Teal is ruining young people」とすればよいですね😊。

The following ideas appear to be behind the establishment of Thiel Fellowship.
“In the US, many students are burdened with huge loans to pay their tuition fees.
They have to work boring jobs that pay well to pay off their diplomas and loans.
This cost is huge and wasteful for society as a whole.

More than 10 years have passed since Thiel Fellowship was established, and it seems to be producing results, such as investing in the founder of Ethereum, a cryptocurrency that has grown to be the second largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin.
However, some young people were forced into bankruptcy soon after starting their business.
University officials seem to be saying, “Teal is ruining young people.''
However, the comments from university officials seem like position talk (although this is obvious).
There are many different opinions, but I am reminded that America is an amazing country where this kind of discussion is taking place.
