PDCA日記 Vol. 1,786「医師のガウンが水色の理由」
私は山崎豊子の本が好きなのですが、一番のお気に入りは名著「白い巨塔」です。
「白い巨塔」は言わずとしれた、医療系社会派小説です。
「白い巨塔」がなぜ白いかについては、小説の中で出てきません。
ただ、医師の白衣から「白い」が来ているという意見が多いようです。
今回紹介する資料「すばらしい人体」は「あなたの体をめぐる知的冒険」をキャッチフレーズにしており、以下のフレーズが印象的でした。
「医療従事者の服装といえば、白というイメージを持つ人が多いかもしれない。
確かに、医師や看護師など医療従事者は白衣を着ていることが多い。
だが、手術や処置の際に身につける使い捨ての物品となると、断然、青系統のものが多くなる。
ドラマの手術シーンを思い浮かべるとわかりやすいが、マスクや帽子、ガウン、手術台にかかったシーツなど、あらゆるものが薄い青～緑色である。
なぜだろうか。
実は、青や緑が赤の補色だからである。
血液を見る機会が多い処置では、医療従事者は赤色をじっと見ることになる。
もしシーツやガウンが白いと、視線を移した際、そこに青緑の残像がちらついて見えにくくなってしまう。
これを補色残像現象という。
そこで、補色である青系統の物品を使い、残像による視野の妨害と目の疲れを軽減するのだ。」（引用終わり）

＜ 本日のボンジュール英語「目の疲れ」 = 「eyestrain」＞
今回出てきた「目の疲れ」の英訳は、「eyestrain」になります。
「目の疲れを軽減する」を英語で表現する場合、「Reduce eyestrain」とすればよいですね😊。

This is called the complementary afterimage phenomenon.
