経済が発展すると、人口増加が止まるのは世界共通の現象であると考えられています。
経済発展で進学率が高まると、教育にお金がかかることが1つの理由です。
しかしながら、経済が発展しても人口が増えている地域があります。
中東です。
中東における一夫多妻制の歴史は古く、コーランでは4人までの妻帯が認められています。
ただ、複数の妻は平等に扱う必要があり、それが出来ない男性は一夫一妻制を取ることになります。
イスラム帝国時代に戦争が多発した中東では、男性の死亡が多かったこともあって、未亡人になる女性が発生しました。
大量発生した未亡人を養うために、一夫多妻制が認められるようになったとイスラム法学の世界では考えられています。
現在でも中東では、一夫多妻制が採用されている国があります。
経済発展しながら人口が増える要因は幾つかありますが、一夫多妻制は要因の1つかもしれません。
日本やアメリカの場合、重婚が法律で禁止されているため、一夫多妻制は採用できません。
今回紹介する資料「アラブの大富豪」は、「欧米企業を買いあさるサウジの王族投資家、『ハコモノ行政』で大成功したドバイの首長、カネ余りのアブダビやカタールの政府など、アラブの大富豪たちの素顔に迫る」をキャッチフレーズにしています。

今回紹介する資料「アラブの大富豪」で印象深いのは、「商売を推奨したコーラン」部分です。
イスラム世界において、利息が禁止されていることはよく知られています。
しかしながら、イスラム教の聖典であるコーランは、「金儲けを肯定し商売を推奨している」と今回紹介する資料「アラブの大富豪」は力説しています。
イスラム教における預言者ムハンマドが40歳過ぎまで商人だったことを考えれば、「コーランの商売推奨」は、ある意味で当然のことなのかもしれません。

P.S. 過去のPDCA日記でも紹介しましたが、キリスト教では元々、利息などの資本主義的な商業主義を否定していました。
しかし、16世紀に宗教改革が行われて、プロテスタント諸国で利子所得が認められるようになりました。
そこから、カソリック諸国でも金融取引による利益追求が容認されるようになります。
どの宗教でもそうですが、時代によって商業主義への捉え方が変わってくるのは興味深いですね。

今回出てきた「コーラン」の英訳は、「Quran」になります。
「商売を推奨したコーラン」を英語にする場合、「Quran recommended business」とすればよいですね😊。

It is well known that interest is prohibited in the Islamic world.
However, this book reiterates that “The Quran (Islamic sourcebook) affirms moneymaking and encourages business”.
Given that the Prophet Muhammad in Islam was a merchant until he was over 40, it might be taken for granted in a sense that "Quran recommended business".
