過去のPDCA日記で、故・野村克也氏のセリフとされている「勝ちに不思議の勝ちあり、負けに不思議の負けなし」を紹介しました。
実は、「勝ちに不思議の勝ちあり、負けに不思議の負けなし」は野村氏のオリジナルではなく、元々は江戸時代の大名である松浦静山の言葉です。
「勝ちに不思議の勝ちあり、負けに不思議の負けなし」は、「上手くいった時はなぜ上手くいったか分からない時があるが、失敗した時は必ず理由が存在する」という意味です。
今回紹介する資料「プロ野球 奇人変人列伝」は「突き抜けた変人は、もはや偉人だ」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「『紙一重の天才』新庄剛志」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「新庄剛志という選手は、生まれ持った高い身体能力を持っていながら、『考える』という行為がまったく苦手だった。
これまで何も考えないでも、プロの第一線でやってこられたのは類いまれな素質のおかげであり、その意味では天才タイプだ。
しかし、何も考えない。
『バカと天才は紙一重』とはよく言うが、彼はまさにそういう人間だ。
何も考えていないのだが、何でもできるという自信だけはある。
あるいは自信というより過信は持っていた。
私の新庄に対する印象は、『バッティング以外は一流』というものだった。
肩や足については、超一流と言えるものを持っていた。
これまでも方の強い選手は見てきたが、新庄の強肩は別格だった。
センターからの送球を見るだけで、釘づけになった。
しかし、これだけ才能を持っていながら、それを生かすための考え方が彼には備わっていなかった。
まさに、『天は二物を与えず』という選手の典型だったのだ。
その意味では、本当に惜しい選手だった。
おそらく最初に入った球団が、阪神であったことが間違いだったのだろう。
もし、巨人のような厳しい球団に入っていたら、もう少し野球に対するしっかりとした考え方が身につき、その後の彼の野球人生は変わっていたかもしれない。
私は人を動かすには3つの方法があると常々思っている。
『論理』、『利害』、『感情』である。
新庄のようなタイプには、論理は通用しない。
利害で動かそうとしても、年俸を払うのは球団だから、私にはどうもできない。
残るのは感情で、あれを動かすしかないと考えた。
1999年、春季キャンプで新庄にピッチャーをやらせたのには、そのような狙いがあった。
目立ちたがり屋の新庄に、楽しく野球をやらせるという目的である。
『人を見て法を説け』ということわざがあるが、まさしく一人ひとりの個性や状況にあった指導が大切ということだ。
この選手でうまくいったから、あの選手も同じように指導すればうまくいくということは決してないのである。
新庄はそのいい例でもあった。」（引用終わり）

P.S. 私がニューヨークに駐在していた2003年、新庄氏はニューヨーク・メッツで大変な人気選手でした。
ニューヨーク・ヤンキースに所属していた松井秀喜選手の人気も凄かったですが、新庄氏は独特のキャラクター（？）もあってか、熱狂的なファンがたくさんいたことを覚えています😊。
先日、日本のプロ野球に復帰を目指していた新庄氏はトライアウトに臨みましたが、彼を受け入れる球団はありませんでした。
プロ野球関係者によると、トライアウトの結果はあまり関係がなく、そのシーズンの調子を見て、オファーを出すかどうかを決めることが一般的であるようです。
48歳の新庄氏は、10年以上も野球の一線から離れていながら、トライアウトでヒットを打ちました。
それでも、「長いシーズンを戦えるかどうかは別問題」と、多くの球団が判断したのかもしれません。
ただ、何歳になっても挑戦しようとする新庄氏の姿は素敵でしたね⚾。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「紙一重」=「fine line」＞
今回出てきた「紙一重」の英訳は、「fine line」になります。
「バカと天才は紙一重」を英語にする場合、「There is a fine line between genius and idiot」とすればよいですね :-)。
The material introduced today "The Lives of Professional Baseball Bizarre Weirdo (Japanese only)" has a catchphrase "The weirdo who pierces through is a great person", and the following phrase in the "Fine line genius: Tsuyoshi Shinjo".
"Tsuyoshi Shinjo was not good at thinking although he had a high physical ability by nature.
He's a genius in that sense because of his extraordinary qualities that he's been on the front lines of the pros, even if he doesn't think about anything.
It is often said to be "There is a fine line between genius and idiot", and he is just such a person.
He doesn't think about anything, but he's confident he can do anything.
Or he had overconfidence rather than confidence.
My impression of Shinjo was that it was first-class except for batting.
He had some of the best shoulders and legs.
I've seen strong players, but Shinjo's strong shoulders were exceptional.
However, while he was so talented, he didn't have the idea to make use of it.
Indeed, it was a typical player who said, 'Heaven does not give two things'.
In that sense, he was a really regrettable player.
Perhaps it was a mistake that the first team to join was the Hanshin Tigers.
If he had been in a tough baseball team like the Yomiuri Giants, he might have learned a little more about baseball and his life in baseball would have changed since then.
I always think there are three ways to move people.
They are 'logic', 'interest', and 'emotion'.
Logic does not work for types like Shinjo.
Even if I try to move it with his interests, I can't do it because it is the team that pays the annual salary.
All that remains is emotion, and I thought I had to move him.
That was the aim of having Shinjo play a pitcher at a spring camp in 1999.
The purpose is to make Shinjo, who wants to stand out, play baseball happily.
There is a saying, 'Look at people and preach the law', but it is important to provide guidance that suits each individual's individuality and situation.
Since this player worked well, that player will never work if he teaches in the same way.
Shinjo was also a good example." (Unquote)
