「Mr. PDCA、もう少し空気を読んだらどうかね。皆が残っているのに早く帰ったり、君は飲み会にも全然来ない。他の人に合わせるということを、少しは学ぶ必要があるのではないか？」
これは、私が以前働いていた会社の偉い方のコメントですが、私はことごとく無視していました😊。
今回紹介する資料「「空気」の研究」は日本社会を覆う「空気」の正体を考察しており、「空気を読むこと」があらゆる局面で求められる現代において、1983年の初版以降、読み継がれている名著でもあります。
終戦直前の1945年4月、護衛の戦闘機なしで戦艦大和が出動する決定が行われた際、「米軍の攻撃を受けて、大和が沈むことは全員分かっていたが、拒否できる空気ではなかった」と会合出席者が、後に語ったことはよく知られています。
私は以前、「空気を読め！」と言われた際、それを拒否して金融の仕事を離れましたが、当時の「空気を読まない選択」は正しかったと感じています（プロジェクト管理という天職に巡り合えたしね！）。

P.S. 数年前、「コーヒーが冷めないうちに」という映画を鑑賞しました。
この作品のキャッチフレーズは「あの日に戻れたら、あなたは誰に会いに行きますか？」で、中々面白かったです（好きな役者が多く、過去に戻れる喫茶店「フニクリフニクラ」の語呂も可愛くて好き♡）。
この映画の中で興味深かったのは、「過去に戻って会いたい人に会っても、過去に起こったことを変えることはできない」というセリフでした。
PDCAカフェである人が、「あの時こうしておけば良かったと後悔しています」と話していました。
同じ悩みをお持ちの方は、この映画を観てみると良いと思います（「コーヒーが冷めないうちに」は小説もあり、こちらも面白いです😊）。
私が過去に戻って、銀行の偉い方の指示に従い、「空気を読む（付き合い残業や飲み会の強要などに応じる）」という選択をした場合であっても、「金融の仕事を離れる」という結果は変わらなかったはずです。
私の好きな曲に「狼に口笛を」があり、以下のように歌われています。
「笑顔を見せろ～♪ 過去を忘れて～♪ 今を生きるんだ～♪」

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「空気を読む」 = 「read between the lines」＞
今回出てきた「空気を読む」の英訳は、「read between the lines」になります。
「空気を読む」を直訳すると、「read the air」となり、ネイティブには意味が通じません。
「Read between the lines」の直訳は、「文脈を読む」になりますが、これで「空気を読む」と英語では表現しているわけですね😊。
"Mr. PDCA, why don't you read the air (read between the lines) a little more? You go home early when everyone is staying office and you don't come to the drinking party at all. You need to learn to fit others, don't you?"
Above comment is from a senior person in may former working place (Bank!) who appeared in the past PDCA Diary, but I ignored all😊.
The material to be introduced today "Research of Air (Japanese only)" is analyzing the identity of "air" covering the whole present Japanese society.
This masterpiece has been read by a lot of corporate executives since the first publication in 1983.
In April 1945 just before the end of the World War II, Japanese Navy issue Yamato (one of largest battleship in human history) to move to the battlefield without any escort aircrafts.
One of the Navy seniors who attended the meeting then said that "All members knew that Yamato will sink with an attack by the US, but it was not an air to refuse this operation."
When I was working at financial institution, my senior person ordered me to read between the lines.
I refused to read between the lines at bank and left there, but I never regret my decision (By that, I could get acquainted with everyone!).

P.S. A few years ago, I watched a movie "Before Coffee Colds Down (Japanese only)".
The catchphrase of this movie was "Who are you going to see if you can return to that day?"
The interesting dialogue in this movie was that "You can not change what happened in the past, even if you return to the past."
There was one participant at PDCA lunch said that "I wish I could go back to that day and start over."
Those who have the same regret had better watch this movie.
Even if I returned to the past and made a choice to "read between the lines (Follow socializing overtime work, attend the drinking party I don't want to go)", the result (leave the bank) did not change.
