【PDCA日記 Vol. 1,391「いい外部性もある」】
私が金融業界出身ということもあって、このPDCA日記では金融・経済の話が登場することがあります。
経済学の勉強は全てのビジネスに通じているため、マルクスの「資本論」やケインズの「雇用・利子および貨幣の一般理論」などの大著は、全てのビジネスパーソンに読んで頂きたいですね :-)。
今回紹介する資料「経済学のおさらい」は、「経済学をちょいとかじれば世の中の動きが底の底からわかってきます」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「外部性⇒郊外のツケを被害者に負わす」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「外部性とは、ある経済主体（たとえば企業）の行動が、市場での取引を介していないのに、ほかの経済主体（たとえば家計）に影響を与えることをいいます。
…などと聞いても意味不明でしょうが、たとえば外部性の例として公害があります。
これは社会に悪い影響をもたらす外部性の例です。
そういった悪い外部性のことを、『外部不経済』と呼んでいます。
外部性には、いい効果をもつものもあります。
たとえば、インターネットや携帯電話回線が普及し、加入者が増えれば増えるほど、もとからの加入者の受ける便益も増大し、ビジネスチャンスも生まれます。
もとからの加入者は、加入者増大のためにコストを払ってはいないのに、市場の外部『いい効果』を受け取れていることになります。
ほかにも、新駅ができることで駅周辺の地価が上がったり商店街が活性化したりするとか、義務教育に英会話やパソコンの授業がとり入れられることで関連する事業に新規の需要が生まれる、などといった例もあります。」（引用終わり）

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「外部性」 = 「externalitiy」＞
今回出てきた「外部性」の英訳は、「externalitiy」になります。
「いい外部性もある」を英語で表現する場合、「There are positive externalities」とすればよいですね :-)。
The material introduced today "Economics Review (Japanese only)" has a catchphrase "If you mess with economics, you can understand the movements of the world from the bottom" and the following phrases were impressive in the part "There are positive externalities".
"Externality means that the behavior of one economic entity (e.g. corporation) affects another economic entity (e.g. household) even though it does not go through transactions in the market.
Pollution is an example of externality.
This is an example of an externality that has a negative impact on society.
Such bad externalities are called 'external diseconomies'.
On the other hand, some externalities have positive effects.
For example, as the Internet and mobile phone lines become more widespread and the number of subscribers increases, so do the benefits to the original subscribers and business opportunities.
The original subscribers are receiving the good effect outside the market, even though they are not paying for the increase in subscribers.
In addition, examples such as the rise of land prices around stations and the activation of shopping malls due to the construction of new stations, and the introduction of English conversation and PC classes in compulsory education will create new demand for related businesses." (Unquote)
