【PDCA日記 Vol. 1,964「メディアで人間嫌いになる？」】
最近、私は色々な場所に行っているのですが、実際に行ってみるのとメディア情報の乖離に驚くことがあります。
少し前に青森に初めて行ったのですが、青森市では「ねぶた」と呼びますが、弘前市では「ねぷた」になる等、現地を訪問して知る情報が多かったですね。
今回紹介する資料「旅の効用：人はなぜ移動するのか」はインドを旅歩いたジャーナリストが書いた作品で、以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「外部の情報のみを通じて世間とコンタクトし、居間でメディアにかじりついていると、あっという間に人間嫌いになってしまう。
メディアが伝えるのは悲惨な出来事ばかりだから、そんなことばかりに関わっていられないと思うようになるからだ。」（引用終わり）

2022年まで、日本のメディアは新型コロナウイルスの感染者を毎日報道していました。
私は当時インドにいたのですが、「コロナは過去のもの」という感じでマスクをしている人はほとんどいませんでした。
飛行機に乗る時だけ、キャビンアテンダントの人に「マスクをつけてね」と言われましたが、乗客のほとんどはマスクをつけていませんでした。
私がインドに行く際、「コロナ患者が急増しているのに大丈夫なのか？」という意見が周りからありました。
日本にいてもインドにいても、病気になる時はなるため、リスクは変わらないと考えていました。
そう言えば、私は2002年から2年間ニューヨークに住んでいたのですが、2001年9月の米国同時多発テロの直後だったため、「大丈夫か？」と色々な人に聞かれたことを覚えています。
当時はテロ対策として、あちこちに州兵が配置されていたことから、「マンハッタンは世界で一番治安が良い街」という意見があったくらいです。
ニューヨークでは、深夜も出歩いていましたが、全く危険はありませんでした。
去年のインド滞在も、約20年前のニューヨーク滞在もそうでしたが、実際の現地の状況はメディアから流れてくる情報とは大きく違いましたね。

＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「人間嫌いの」 = 「misanthropic」＞
今回出てきた「人間嫌いの」の英訳は、「misanthropic」になります。
「メディアで人間嫌いになる？」を英語で表現する場合、「We will be misanthropic through the media?」とすればよいですね😊。

Until the year of 2022, the Japanese media reported daily on the number of Corona infection.
I was in India at the time, and almost no one was wearing a mask because of the feeling that "Corona is a thing of the past."
When I tried to go to India last year, people asked me, "Is it OK to be abroad now?"
I thought that whether I was in Japan or India, the risk of infection would not change.
Come to think of it, I lived in New York for two years from 2002.
Since it was right after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, I remember being asked by many people, "Is NY safe?"
At that time, many National Guards were stationed here and there as a countermeasure against terrorism, so there was even an opinion that Manhattan was the safest city in the world.
In New York, I used to go out late at night, but I never felt in danger.
It was the same with my stay in India last year and my stay in New York about 20 years ago, but the actual situation was very different from the information that came from the media.
