インドで生活をしていると、「エコ」や「グリーン」という単語によく遭遇します。
2023年に入ってアメリカで話題になったのが、「ガスコンロ論争」です。
一部の民主党の政治家が、「ガスコンロは二酸化窒素を排出しておりがエコではない」と主張しているのです。
共和党を中心とする保守派の議員は、「自由に料理をする権利がアメリカにはある」と反発しています。
議員同士がSNS上で激しい議論を行っており、アメリカという国の特徴がよく出ていると感じました。
ロサンゼルス、サンフランシスコ、シアトル、ニューヨークなどでは規制の動きが出始めており、新築時におけるガス器具の使用を禁止する法律が制定されたアメリカの都市も出始めています。
ニューヨーク州のホークル知事は、「同州内のすべての新しい建物のオール電化」という目標に指示を表明しています。
一方、アメリカ人の3分の1以上はガスコンロを保有しており、飲食店ではガスコンロの火を使って調理するニーズがあります。
ガスコンロを電気に変えることでコストがかかる懸念もあり、議論が激しくなっています。
そんな中、アメリカの副大統領がガスコンロを使っていることが明らかになり、話題になりました。
今も昔も、アメリカの副大統領は話題を提供してくれるようです。
「不都合な真実」という本の中で、ゴア元副大統領は「人間はエネルギーを使い過ぎている」という警報を2006年に出しました。
ただ、ゴア副大統領が2006年に消費した電気代が3万ドル以上になっていることが報道され、「言っていることとやっていることが違う」という議論になっています。
アメリカでは、色々なことが議論になりますね。
