大物外国人や外資系企業が日本にやってくる場合、メディアなどが「黒船来航」と表現することがあります。
「黒船来航」とは、1853年にアメリカ海軍のペリー代将率いる一団が、浦賀に来航した出来事を指します。
当時のアメリカはアジア進出の足掛かりとして、燃料や食料を確保するための港を探しており、鎖国中だった徳川幕府の開国を求め、大統領の親書を持ってペリーがやってきたのでした。
今回紹介する資料「ペリー艦隊日本遠征記」は、「現代日本の姿を決定した大事件のドキュメンタリー」をキャッチフレーズにしており、以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「キリスト教徒としては、彼らの迷信や偶像崇拝のさまざまな様相を見きわめ、ひいてはより純粋な信仰心と啓発的な礼拝とがいつか日本人をキリスト教世界に引き入れる日の来ることを願わずにはいられない。」（引用終わり）

P.S. 本書を読んで、ペリーは個人的にキリスト教を日本で広めたいと考えていたことを初めて知りました。
キリスト教布教のため、大昔から多くの宣教師たちが世界を旅したことは知られていますが、ペリーにもその意識があったとは驚きです。
今後、海外駐在や海外留学を検討している方は、今回紹介した資料「ペリー艦隊日本遠征記」を一読し、当時のチャレンジングな航海を垣間見るとよいでしょう。
ペリーは、琉球（沖縄）や父島なども訪問しており、当時の様子が鮮明に描かれており、この部分も面白いですね :-)。
When a famous foreigner or a foreign-affiliated company comes to Japan, the media etc. may describe it as "Black Ship Visit".
"Black Ship Visit" refers to an event in 1853, when a group led by US Navy Vice Admiral Perry arrived at Uraga.
At that time, the United States was looking for a port to secure fuel and food as a stepping stone to advance into Asia.
Admiral Perry came with a personal letter of the U.S. president, seeking the opening of the Tokugawa shogunate, which was in the middle of isolation from the world.
The material to be introduced today "The Perry Fleet Japan Expedition (Japanese only)" has the catchphrase of "Documentary of a major incident that determined the appearance of modern Japan" and the following phrases were impressive.
"As a Christian, I (Perry) cannot help but see the different aspects of Japanese superstitions and idol worship, and hope that a purer religion and enlightening worship will one day bring Japanese into the Christian world." (Unquote)
