過去の投稿で、足利幕府第6代将軍「足利義教」（あしかがよしのり）がくじで選ばれたことを紹介しました。
足利義教は「くじ引き将軍」と人々から揶揄されたそうですが、日本の政治ではくじが重要な局面で登場したりします
今回紹介する資料「おみくじの歴史」は「仏のお告げはなぜ詩歌なのか」という命題にチャレンジしており、「おみくじの平等性」部分の以下のフレーズが印象的でした。
「明治改元にあたっては、明治という年号がくじで選ばれた
明治政府副総裁であった岩倉具視が菅原家ノ堂上に命じて奉らせた年号の中から学者の松平慶永が二、三の良案を選び、それを天皇に上奏した。
天皇は慶応四年（明治元年）九月七日の夜、宮中の賢所（かしどころ）でくじを引き、明治の号が選ばれたのだという。」（引用終わり）

今回出てきた「元号」の英訳は、「era name」になります。
「明治という元号はくじで選ばれた」を英語で表現する場合、「The era name Meiji was chosen by lottery」とすればよいですね😊。
