【PDCA日記 Vol. 1,582「目上の人が運転する場合」】
会社員になると、最初のマナー研修を受けることがあります。
エレベーターや飲食店、タクシーの席順などはよく知られていますが、「目上の人が運転する場合」については、あまり知られていないのかもしれません。
今回紹介する資料「社会人のマナーと言葉づかい」は、「『できる大人』になるためのバイブル」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「目上の人が運転する場合」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「取引先の人や目上の人が運転する自家用車に乗る場合は、運転する人に敬意を払うため、助手席が上座になります。
また、後部座席は運転席の後ろが第2席、左側（助手席の後ろ）が第3席、最も窮屈な真ん中が下座となります。」（引用終わり）
P.S. 日本でタクシーに乗る場合、運転席の後ろが上座になります。
一方、海外のシニアとタクシーにのると、「アメリカやイギリスでは、助手席の後ろが上座と考えている人が多い」とコメントしていました。
理由としては、「運転手の後ろの席では前が良く見えず、助手席の後ろのようが見晴らしが良いから」とのことでした。
国や地域によって、タクシーの上座の位置が変わるのは、面白いですね :-)。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「上座」 = 「seat of honor」＞
今回出てきた「上座」の英訳は、「seat of honor」になります。
「日本では、タクシー運転手の後ろの席が上座である」を英語で表現する場合、「In Japan, the seat behind the taxi driver is the seat of honor」とすればよいですね :-)。

The material to be introduced today "The etiquette and language of working people (Japanese only" has a catchphrase of "Bible for becoming an polite business persons" and the following phrases impressive.
"If you are in a private car driven by a business partner or a superior, the front passenger seat will be the seat of honor.
In the rear seats, the second seat is behind the driver's seat, the third seat is on the left and the lowermost seat is the bottom seat." (Unquote)
