私のビジネススクール時代の友人が、ペット保険の経営をしています。
彼と最近話をしたところ、業績は非常に順調なようで、「ペットは家族」という考えが日本でも強まっていることが、ペット保険躍進の背景にあるようです。
麻布十番や青山などのハイソ（？）なところを散歩していると、ペット専用のマッサージ店などに遭遇します。
中には、人間よりも良い生活をしている犬もおり、江戸時代に「生類憐みの令」が出た頃よりも、動物の地位は上がっているように感じます。
今回紹介する資料「「奴隷」になった犬、そして猫」は、「ペットブームの裏側を暴く」をキャッチフレーズにしており、「子どもを超えた犬猫の頭数」部分の以下フレーズが印象的でした。
「2018年時点で、国内で飼育されている犬の数は890万3千匹、猫は964万9千匹と推計されている。
同じ年の15歳未満の子どもの数は1,553万人。
2003年に犬猫の推計飼育数と15歳未満の子どもの人口は逆転し、いまや犬や猫などのペットは『家族の一員』という立場を確固たるものにした。」（引用終わり）

P.S. ペット保険会社の経営者と話をしていると、人間である私よりも、手厚い補償を受けている犬や猫がいることが分かりました。
健康保険や自宅の火災保険などを除き、基本的に保険に入っていない私ならではかもしれませんが、時代の流れを感じるペット保険会社の経営者との会食でした :-)。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「超える」 = 「exceed」＞
今回出てきた「超える」の英訳は、「exceed」になります。
「犬猫の頭数は子供の数を超えた」を英語にすると、「Number of dogs and cats exceeded children」となりますね :-)。

His business seems to be performing very well, with the idea that "Pets are family" is growing in Japan.
The material introduced today “Dogs & Cats Became Slaves (Japanese only)” has a catchphrase of “Reveal the back of the pet boom” and the following phrases were impressive.
"As of 2018, it has been estimated that the number of domestic dogs bred is 89.93 million and that cats is 9.649 million in Japan.
The number of children under 15 in the same year was 15.53 million.
In 2003, the estimated number of dogs and cats reared and the population of children under the age of 15 reversed, and now pets such as dogs and cats have cemented their position as 'members of the family'." (Unquote)
