2003年8月のニューヨーク、私が債券取引の確認を行っていたところ、いきなりパソコンの電源が切れ、オフィスの電気が消えました（2003年北アメリカ大停電）。
その2年前の2001年9月、ニューヨークで同時多発テロが起こっていたこともあり、テロを警戒して、元軍人の同僚たちが一目散にビル外に飛び出したのが印象的でした。
東京とは違い、マンハッタンでは地震がないため、通常とは異なる出来事が起こると、基本的にビルの外に出ることになっていました。
2003年の大停電から17年以上が経過しましたが、停電の理由は未だに不明な点が多いとされています。
停電と言えば、カリフォルニア州において2000年の夏から2001年に停電が頻発した「カリフォルニア電力危機」が有名です。
今回紹介する資料「続・善と悪の経済学 資本主義の精神分析」では、カリフォルニア電力危機の要因を作ったと言われるエンロンについて、以下のような描写が行われています。
「電力価格が低いと感じた場合、エンロンの上層部は発電所を停止させた。これによりエネルギー需要が高まり、その結果、価格も高騰した。利幅が十分に大きくなると、発電所は再稼働された。
この手口によってカリフォルニアでは短い年数の間に何百回もの『ブラックアウト』が起き、巨額の経済損失が生じた。それだけではない。
自然災害など、電力需要の増加につながるすべてのことを、エンロンの経営陣は大喜びしていたのだ。
のちに、この様子が記録された衝撃的な音声が発見されている。
巨大な山火事で供給が麻痺し、多数の住居、いくつもの住宅地が燃える中、トップたちが電話で『よし、燃えろ！もっと燃えろ！』と歓喜する声が残されている。
エンロンの策士が略奪したのはカリフォルニアだけではないが、もっとも稼いだのはここだ。このトリックでエンロンは300億ドルを懐に入れた。」（引用終わり）
このようなビジネスが続くわけがなく、2001年12月、エンロンは粉飾決算が明るみになって、市場から退出させられました。
長い間ビジネスを続けるためには、以前のPDCA日記で紹介した「三方よし」の精神が重要であることを、エンロンのケースで学んだことを覚えています。

P.S. 私が2010年10月、ロンドンに旅行した際、「エンロン」の演劇が上映されており、懐かしくて思わず鑑賞してしまいました。
「金こそが全て～♪」を連呼するミュージカルを観たのは初めてでしたが、「ニューヨークでブローカーをやっていたころの自分も、頭の中は数字しかなかったなぁ」と苦笑いしながら観たことを記憶しています。
2011年3月、フランスでの留学を終える際、指導教授が「Mr. PDCA（私のことね😊）、あまり自分中心に考えず、社会に良い影響を与えるような仕事をしろよ」とコメントしていました。
その時は意味がよく分かりませんでしたが、今は「周りの人達が健康で、笑顔で働けるような環境を整備すること」がミッションであると考えています😊。
＜ Mr. PDCAのボンジュール英語「発電所」 = 「power plant」＞
今回出てきた「発電所」の英訳は、「power plant」になります。
「植物」を意味する「plant」がなぜ出てくるのかと思われるかもしれませんが、英語の「plant」には「生み出すもの」というニュアンスがあります。
「電力を生み出すもの」という感じで、「power plant」は「発電所」となるわけですね😊。
In August 2003, when I was confirming bond transactions in New York, my computer suddenly turned off and the electricity in my office disappeared (Northeast blackout of 2003).
There was a tragic terrorist attack in September 2001, so the former soldier colleagues jumped out of the building, because people misunderstood that the blackout in 2003 was related to terrorism.
Unlike in Tokyo, there are no earthquakes in Manhattan, therefore, we were supposed to go outside the building when something unusual occurred.
More than 17 years have passed since the blackout in 2003, but the reason for the blackout is still unclear.
Speaking of blackouts, "California power crisis" is famous.
"California power crisis" is also called "Western U.S. Energy Crisis of 2000 and 2001", and it was a situation in which the U.S. state of California had a shortage of electricity supply caused by market manipulations, and capped retail electricity prices.
The material to be introduced today "Economics of Good and Evil: The Quest For Economic Meaning From Gilgamesh To Wall Street" depicted Enron, which is said to have created the factor of "California power crisis" as follows.
"If Enron felt that the price of electricity is low, they stopped the power plant, which raised energy demand and resulted in a soaring price. When the margin became sufficiently large, the power plant was restarted."
"With this approach, hundreds of 'blackouts' occurred in a short period of time in California, resulting in huge economic losses. At the same time, Enron's management team was very pleased natural disasters, because that lead to increase of electricity demand."
"A shocking voice recorded this way later was discovered. The supply was paralyzed with a huge wildfire and many houses and several residential areas were burning. There is a voice record of Enron executives screaming with delight 'Good, blaze! Burn more!' Enron made tremendous amount of profit (US 30 billion) with this unethical method." (Unquote)
This sort of business model could not continue and Enron was kicked out form the market due to fraud accounting in December 2001.
In order to continue business for a long time, the spirit of "Benefit for All 3 Sides (Buyer, Seller & Society)" is important, I suppose.

P.S. When I traveled to London in October 2010, musical "Enron" was screened, so I naturally enjoyed seeing it.
It was my first time to see a musical calling "Money is all ~ ♪", but I realized that I had only figures in my head when I was a securities broker in New York.
Therefore, I made a bitter smile while watching this comedy (tragedy?) musical while recalling the days in New York.
When I finished studying abroad in France in March 2011, one professor made last remarks to me as follows.
"Mr. PDCA (me😊), do not think about yourself too much, but you had better focus on work that makes a good impact on society."
At that time, I could not understand what this French professor wanted to tell me well.
However, I suppose that my current mission is to "create an environment where people around me are healthy and they can work with a smile"😊.
